Yes.they are VERY important. Motorcycles are performance machines that need to be in tip top condition to keep you safe. If say an axle snaps on a car you probably will crash. If an axle snaps on a bike.your probably dead. A plug blows out of a tire on a car.you crash but are likely alive or maybe not crash On a bike your dead! There is a certain amount of extra care that needs to be taken when dealing with a machine that you truly depend on with your life. Now for some anecdotal evidence.

When I did my 15k service 2k miles late, my rear brake banjo bolt was a good 1/2 a turn too loose. OK for now, but in 5k.10k.who knows. That brake fluid could come shooting out, get on the rear tire and cause me to crash! It is little stuff like that that can sometimes be the difference between life and death. And I know I like living! Do what cha gotta do but if you are going to skills intervals at least look over the bike really good every 1k or so. There might be one of two of us on this forum who think that the dealerships are a rip-off when it comes to service.

I have watched the service departments do a $400-$500 1k service and it is mostly a joke. They change the fluids - about $55 in fluids and a filter. Then they supposedly 'check' a long list of nuts and bolts, which they don't really check very well, if at all. I've never seen a Harley tech put a torque wrench on a bike at any service point. Then you are out the door, four or five hundred dollars poorer.

I can change the fluids in all three holes in under thirty minutes and I don't have a lift. Modern Harley Davidson motorcycles are not the old shovel-head or Iron-Heads or even Evo's; they are well built machines that can go for tens of thousands of miles with very little maintenance. If all you ever do to your Harley is change the fluids as per the schedule, replace the air filter as needed, and change the plugs every couple of years, keep the air pressure in the tires at the right specs, and check the belt tension from time to time, you bike will last a very long time. Harley dealers derive a lot of their income from selling you $5 t-shirts for $35 while you are being raped by their service department. Harley service departments are notorious for hiring inexperienced techs and letting them work mostly unsupervised.

They charge you $85 per hour at the dealership while paying these guys $8.50 per hour. No matter how much you pay the dealer, these techs are a disaster waiting to happen to your bike. At our local shop I have seen more screwed up Harley Davidson motorcycle come there after the dealership did something really stupid to the machine. Get the service manual and a couple of wrenches and you can perform virtually all of the maintenance that is needed to keep your Harley running for years. And don't think that the dealership is going to put a real mechanic on your bike unless it is a big job. That guy changing your fluids, spark plugs, and filter was working at Wal-Mart last week, probably for more money.
