I have had mine for 3 years now. I had the wiring harness to the voltage regulator catch on fire this year. It was strapped to the block with a metal strap with wore thru the insulation. Mercury stepped up to the plate & made me a very loyal customer. That is the only problem I have had with the engine.
Mine starts with no problem. Cold start, with the motor trimmed down I push the choke a couple of times then hold it in & start it. It starts on the 1st or 2nd try. After I have been running it that day all I do is trim the motor down & start it. I do not choke it. That works for me.
As far as gas, I always put in near the area I plan to fish so a tank of gas in my Ranger 185vs last me 4 to 6 weeks fishing 4 to 5 days a week. I do wear out trolling motors & batteries though.
